ESPN called it “the most riveting episode in the sport’s history.”
The Tie-break is an ongoing collaborative project involving the
reenactment of the legendary 1980 Wimbledon Gentlemen’s Singles Finals
between Björn Borg and John McEnroe as performed by the artists Tibi
Tibi Neuspiel and Geoffrey Pugen. The first critically acclaimed
iteration of this project took place at Nuit Blanche Toronto, 2011,
during which the artists recreated the original fourth set tie-break
from the match over 12 consecutive hourly performances on a specially
installed court in the heart of the city’s financial district. In
this, the second iteration of The Tie-break, the project has evolved
into series of works responding to the particular site of a gallery
installation. Works include painting, sculpture, photography, and
video.
Tibi Tibi Neuspiel’s sculptures have been shown at Art Basel and the NY Art Book Fair at MOMA PS1. His previous experiments with performance include weighing 200 lbs. in the year 2000 while he was 20.
Geoffrey Pugen’s work has been included in publications like Artforum and Adbusters. He is a recipient of the K.M Hunter Award for Interdisciplinary art.
Opening Celebration is Wednesday January 11th 6-9 p.m
